Elgin - Paul Cluver - Zuid Afrika

In South Africa, there is a cooler region called Elgin. It is situated on a high plateau at an elevation of 200–400 meters. Due to this altitude, the cooling influences of the ocean, and chilly nights, the temperatures result in wines that are fresher, with more elegant fruit flavors and higher acidity. Consequently, it is the ideal home for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

While I was there, I visited the world-renowned estate Paul Cluver.
I had previously met their master winemaker, Andries Burger, during a masterclass for my WSET 3 course, and I thought it would be nice to pay him a visit. Unfortunately, he was on holiday that week, but we were still able to enjoy a tasting.

As I was enjoying the wine in the garden, I was suddenly surprised by a tap on my shoulder. Andries Burger had to drop by the winery briefly, and when he heard from reception that I was there tasting, he came over spontaneously. Although he didn't really have the time, he wanted to discuss the wines I was tasting in more depth. This was a wonderful surprise that I certainly hadn't expected anymore! South African wines can be truly delicious, but the wines from Paul Cluver are of exceptional quality and have truly stolen my heart.
