Montalcino - Italy

South of Siena and west of Pienza, in the breathtaking Val d'Orcia Natural Park, lies a classic, fairytale-like hilltop village: Montalcino. This beautiful village, completely surrounded by ramparts, boasts an impressive medieval castle. But what makes Montalcino world-famous is the production of the precious Brunello red wine.

Montalcino was already renowned for its fine red wines in the 15th century. The wine must be made exclusively from 100% Sangiovese and must undergo a minimum aging of four years for regular wines and five years for reserve wines before being sold, two of which must be spent in large oak barrels. Brunello di Montalcino is (along with Barolo, Barbaresco, and Franciacorta) the most prized and expensive Italian wine. A bottle from a good vintage can cost hundreds of euros.

Brunello wines are truly delicious, but unfortunately quite expensive. The Brunello from Val di Suga is garnet red. The rich, complex nose immediately opens with dark cherries, orange, and violet, followed by broader, more complex notes of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon, and chocolate with a menthol finish. On the palate, this Brunello has a classic style, elegant tannins, and a long finish.

If a bottle is too pricey for you, simply visit one of the charming wine bars or restaurants and enjoy a delicious glass of wine. The food is also delicious, and the medieval town, surrounded by vineyards, is definitely worth a visit.

Nice lunch tip for a good affordable lunch with a good glass of wine: Le Potazzine
