Passion, Meltwater and Argentine Pride: Our Visit to Bodega Budeguer

In our search for the finest wines for Passion for Wine Breda , we travel the world, but sometimes you arrive at a place where everything is just right. In northern Argentina, we found Bodega Budeguer: a family business that has been working tirelessly since 2005 to create wines that do justice to their heritage. We visited their estates in Maipú and Agrelo and were overwhelmed by the quality and hospitality.

The Power of the Andes

Upon arriving at the bodega, we're thrust into the action. The atmosphere is energetic; the first Pinot Noir of the season has just been harvested. As the sun shines over the vineyards, export manager Leandro explains how essential nature is here. In a region that receives less than 200 mm of rainfall annually, survival is an art. The family uses an ingenious drip irrigation system using pure meltwater from the Andes.

Precision is everything here. The grapes grow on alluvial soil, are harvested entirely by hand, and undergo a second, rigorous selection on the sorting table. Only the very best fruit makes it into the bottle.

A Masterclass in Balance

In the cellar, we meet head winemaker Frederico Bizzotto. Although he speaks only Spanish, and Leandro provides a wink, the passion in Frederico's eyes speaks volumes. We get a unique glimpse into their philosophy on oak use. Leandro emphasizes: "Balance is everything." They use French oak extensively, but primarily used barrels. The goal? To add subtle complexity without the oak overpowering the pure flavor of the grape.

The Tasting: From Experimental White to Exceptional Red

The tasting that follows is a journey through different terroirs:

  • Chardonnay (Maipú): A warm region, the wine remains surprisingly fresh because Frederico blocks the malolactic fermentation. Aging on the lees for 14 months with batonnage gives the wine that wonderfully creamy finish and full character.

  • Sauvignon Blanc Fumé: A daring experiment! Inspired by New Zealand techniques, Frederico ferments this wine in heavily toasted oak. The result is a crisp Sauvignon Blanc with an intriguing smoky edge.

  • Pinot Noir (Uco Valley): A fascinating comparison between two vineyards. The Vita Flora (VF) is rich and juicy with notes of blueberry and marzipan. The Gualtallary (GY) , on the other hand, is more elegant and, with its earthy notes and fresh cherries, almost resembles a German Spätburgunder.

  • Cabernet Franc Partida Limitada: According to the winemaker, Argentina's rising star. The 2022 vintage was the absolute highlight for us: perfect balance, pure fruit, and a refined peppery finish. A wine with impressive structure.

  • Malbec: Of course, we couldn't ignore Malbec. "This grape belongs here," says Leandro proudly. And you can taste it; the ideal conditions in Agrelo result in a wine that exudes both power and elegance.

Hospitality at the Waterfront

After the tasting, we move to a beautiful garden room, adjacent to the basin where the precious meltwater is stored. Here, Argentine hospitality truly becomes tangible. While we enjoy a glass of silky Petit Verdot , a cold buffet with the finest cheeses and olives awaits.

But it didn't stop there. The barbecue was fired up, and we were treated all evening to authentic empanadas, tortillas, and the famous Argentinian beef. The balmy evening temperature and conversations with Frederico and Leandro completed the picture. "It was a good time" is an understatement; if the bus hadn't been waiting, we probably would still be there.

Our Judgment

Bodega Budeguer's wines are the result of a perfect interplay between the unique conditions of the Uco Valley and the winemaker's vision. Diversity, character, and unparalleled purity.
