Zuid-Afrika - General

In December 2017, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel through South Africa. I went on a road trip and visited several wine regions. Not everyone realizes just how many vineyards South Africa actually has, but it makes perfect sense—the conditions there are optimal, and the grapes thrive in that environment. There are three major areas where most of the vineyards are established:

Coastal Region: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Constantia, Swartland en Tygerberg Breede River Valley: Worcester, Nye Valley en Robertson Cape South Coast: Walker Bay en Elgin

Variety and Sustainability

I was able to enjoy many beautiful wines during my trip. There is such a variety of grapes that there is always something to suit your palate. The grapes that thrive there include Syrah, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and, of course, South Africa’s signature grape: Pinotage.

This variety grows only in South Africa and is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. While the wine is widely available, the Pinotage I personally prefer is from Meerendal.

It is clear that South Africa understands the importance of nature and the necessity of treating it with respect. Almost every winery has a sustainability program focused on both the environment and the community. This is something Europeans could certainly learn from.
