Onlangs mocht ik een langgekoesterde droom afvinken van mijn bucketlist: een bezoek aan Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri. Dit is de plek waar de Italiaanse wijnwereld voorgoed veranderde en waar de allereerste ‘Super Tuscan’ het levenslicht zag.

Whoever says Bolgheri, says 'Super Tuscans'. But what does that term actually mean? And why is Grattamacco one of the most important names in this success story? During my visit to this iconic estate, we dove into the history of a region that changed the Italian wine world forever.

Sometimes you have those moments where everything is just right. You take one sip and you know it immediately: this is so special, I have to share it with the rest of the world. That happened to me recently in the rolling hills of the Italian region of Le Marche, at the fantastic Terracruda winery. There, I tasted a series of wines that made my heart beat faster as a sommelier – authentic, pure, and bursting with character.

Some wine trips feel like a time machine. Recently, my passion for authentic wines brought me to the south of Italy, to the Bianchini Rossetti winery. Here, in the shadow of an ancient mega-volcano, I discovered the cradle of the most legendary wine of antiquity: Falerno del Massico. It turned out to be a day full of history, volcanic power, and a lunch that would make the gods jealous.

Casablanca, the first more 'cool climate' area with mainly granite-clay soils. Here, the focus is on white (70%) with some Pinot Noir and Merlot. Concha y Torro started viticulture here in the 1980s in this wine region of approximately 6,000 hectares. We visit Indomita, a white winery established in 2001, located high on a hill.

From the bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires, we took the boat and crossed the Rio de la Plata. Destination: Uruguay! While Argentina boasts the grandeur of the Andes, Uruguay surprises with an intimate, almost European atmosphere. In Colonia del Sacramento, we not only found a historical gem, but also discovered that Uruguay is a wine country bursting with diversity and character.
